Graševina (in Hungarian Olaszrizling, in English Welschriesling) is the most popular grape variety in Croatia. Being dominant in one quarter of the entire growing area, this variety is cultivated in the continental wine-growing regions, so it is present in such prominent places in Croatia like Kutjevo, Drávaszög (namely the Croatian part of the historic Baranya region) or Ilok. The story of graševina has been attracted more and more international interest lately. Zoltán Győrffy, editor in chief of Pécsi Borozó (online gastronomic and wine magazine) and expert in Croatian wines is going to present four wine-pairs to the audience to show a young and a matured graševina from the same area in the seminar. Keywords of this course are four wineries, four growing areas, and eight wines.

In recent years, it has become increasingly apparent that winemakers around Lake Balaton put in a considerable effort in making wine of Olaszrizling grape variety. Olaszrizling is not only the first, starter item in the wine lists in these regions, but often it is a top wine of the wineries as well. Gabriella Mészáros, Hungary's first international wine academy graduate, is going to give a fascinating lecture on the reasons behind this phenomenon. Gabriella, who is a wine teacher and expert, is going to analyse the contribution of the individual growing areas and different vintages to the development of final Olaszrizling wine styles coming from all six wine-growing regions situated around the lake. Wines offered in this master course are provided from the stock of the Budapest Bortársaság (translated as Budapest Wine Society), a big wine retail company.

In order to create a unique image to the region as wine-growing area, winemakers of Csopak established a voluntary system on appellation of origin called Code of Csopak (Csopaki Kódex), which basically relies solely on Olaszrizling grape variety. Goal of the initiative was to form a clear impression in consumers that Olaszrizling wines from the vineyards around the village Csopak are associated with a unique and typical wine type as well as with a reliable and high quality. To achieve it, a multi-level system was established, which, among others, contains regulations on control of vine-growing and wine-making activities, as well as requires a wine review performed by a jury of independent wine experts. This master course provides a comprehensive view into the concept of the Code of Csopak, indeed, audience can even taste the first wines made under these regulations.
